NASA's Curiosity rover has beamed back pictures of a dust storm that has engulfed much of Mars over the last two weeks and prompted NASA's Opportunity rover to suspend science operations, the US space agency said on Thursday.
NASA plans to install ECOSTRESS on the International Space Station (ISS) that will measure the temperature of plants from space, enabling researchers to determine plant water use and to study how drought conditions affect plant health.

Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) System of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully scored a direct hit on incoming missile today at around 09:45 am from Dr Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha. The interceptor directly hit the target at an altitude of about 15 kilometre and destroyed it into fragments. The spectacular success puts India in the league of a very few select nations world over in the arena of critical defence technology. Today’s direct interception is fourth in a row, where the missiles have scored a perfect hit on the incoming missile. In text book style launch, the incoming ballistic missile was launched from LC-III complex of ITR, which followed the exact path of intended ballistic missile. The third quarter of 2017 saw Google acquire 2,000 HTC engineers and intellectual property, as well as the launch of their second Made by Google line of products. During today’s earnings call, Sundar Pichai talked more about that deal, as well as their broader hardware business. During this quarter’s recap, the Google CEO talked about the Home Max, Pixel 2, and how this year the company plans to get devices into more people’s hands by scaling their go-to-market strategy. We’re investing more in marketing. We’re launching in more countries. And we’re offering these devices in more retailers. And we’re already seeing results. Facebook keeps all of us in touch with our friends and relatives and it is also using our personal data to serve us ads according to our likes and dislikes — and there is nothing new about it. But do you really want to share that information with the site? Generally, users while logging into apps and websites through Facebook forget that they are also giving permissions to these apps to look into their profile. Facebook does not let them identify you as it shares all the personal information in bulk. The social networking site while sharing the information with any third party anonymises the data so that they are not able to know who you are. For instance, it will share a phone number but won’t tell whose number it is. However, if you are one among those who are concerned about priv
Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is all set to launch its navigation satellite IRNSS-1H this evening. The satellite will lift off at 7 PM from the second launch pad of the Satish Dhavan Space Centre at Sriharikotta, on board the rocket PSLV C39. The 29-hour countdown for the mission that began at 2 PM yesterday is progressing smoothly. The satellite IRNSS-1H is a part of the indigenous navigation system called ‘NavIC,’ that was initially planned to have a constellation of seven satellites. As the rubidium atomic clocks of the first satellite in the series called IRNSS-1A malfunctioned, the eighth one is being launched today to take up its mantle. NavIC system is equivalent to the GPS service, having footprint over the whole of India and about 1500 kilometers from its b
Many Facebook users today reported experiencing an outage as they "struggled" to access the popular social media site. A section of users across geographies, including the US and Europe, reported that they faced log-in problems, while others had a difficulty in uploading videos, liking or commenting on posts, loading pages, or saw error messages. It could not be confirmed if users in India also faced similar difficulty. An email sent to Facebook did not elicit any response. While reports put the number of affected users to thousands, not all users faced issues on the popular social media platform. Facebook has over two billion monthly active users globally. India is one of the biggest markets for the US-based firm. There were also reports of some users of Instagram -- another Faceboo...
WhatsApp continuously monitors malicious applications that may try to compromise its in-built security and end-to-end (E2E) encryption, even as it works to educate governments about the limited information it can provide to them. “If there are malicious applications out there that are injecting code or otherwise compromising the security of the application, we reach out to Google to say that it shouldn’t exist on the Play Store as well,” Alan Kao, Software Engineer at WhatsApp, told a select group of journalists here on Monday. He was responding to a question about how third party apps offering services such as changing wallpapers or status messages on the Android operating system impact the inbuilt security features in WhatsApp. Typically the operations team and legal team track th
